THERE ARE OVER 6 BILLION PEOPLE alive today! In the next 50 years the number will rise to over 9 billion. But one fifth of the world's population does not have enough to eat. This exercise is to help you understand how and why the worlds' population is changing. We will be looking at statistics for two countries, India and the UK. Part one teaches you how to use a spreadsheet to discover how fast population is growing in two different countries, and in the whole world. Part two introduces you to population pyramids. Part three is a quiz to see how much you have learned. Part four At the end of the exercise you will hand in a word-processed document containing a variety of graphical presentations and a written description of your findings. Click

Start Excel by clicking on the Excel 2) Copy the table below by clicking the mouse button and dragging across the table. Right click the mouse on the highlighted cells and choose "copy" to save all the data to the clipboard. This can take some practice! India data* (figures in thousands)

Paste the selection into a new Excel sheet. You
can change the size of the font used for the axes labels by clicking on
them and making changes in the format axis box. You can investigate other
options to change colours to the bars etc. 8) Finally, save your work and go on to step 2 below.
