Ignous rock climbing

One of my most favourite spots in the world! Bouldering is doing hard climbing just a few feet above the ground and it is becoming a very popular cult sport in it's own right. However this has led to problems of erosion and litter at places like Chinkwell Tor. Those cracks aren't bedding planes in the rock, but features resulting from the cooling of the granite. Dartmoor granite contains large crystals because the rock cooled so slowly. The crystals are so big that climbers can use them to pull on! |

This enormous crag contains routes over 1000 feet long. In places the rock is totally smooth like a mirror. It's granite but the rock has been polished by glaciers. This route "Status Quo" is so slippery that it is normal to fall off several times during an ascent! |
