Notes
for Teachers:
This
exercise is in the middle of being devised. In it's present form it
is full of errors and has yet to be used with a class!!
Who is it for?
The target age group is KS3 although it is suitable for older students.
Relevant topics would be settlement or development studies.
What
are the aims?
The exercise meets a great many of the requirements of the KS3 National
Curriculum. Decide for yourself!
ICT
resources needed
Unfortunately MapPoint is not available under Microsoft's School
Agreement and is therefore quite an expensive network purchase. Write
to them and complain! A fairly modern PC network will be required, given
the memory intensive nature of the software. Screen resolution will
need to be at least 600x800. An interactive whiteboard would be a great
asset! It is unlikely that access permissions on a school network will
allow the excel data file to be downloaded by students.
Differentiation
/ Progrssion
Students
should be able to complete part 1 quickly. It is expected that students
should be able to describe the pattern of infant mortality using suitable
terminology. Part 2 allows students to develop their new skills and
explore the potential of MapPoint as they investigate the pattern of
infant mortalty further. By the end of the exercise
most students should have... Some will have...
Other
technical issues
Screenshots are from a Windows XP machine running MapPoint 2002 and
Office XP. I am testing it on a school network - Windows 98 MapPoint
2002 and Office 2000
