Level 1

Brief description of the earthquake. There are no subheadings or images. Geographical vocabulary is not used.

Level 2
Information is selected from one or more resources and used to describe the earthquake under the headings given. The city of Kobe is not described.

Level 3
The city of Kobe is described. Information is extracted from more than one resource to write a description of the earthquake under the headings given. There is some use of appropriate geographical vocabulary.

Level 4
The causes of the earthquake are described using appropriate vocabulary. The report describes how the earthquake effected the lives of the people of Kobe. A variety of resources have been used and appropriate pictures included.

Level 5
The causes of the earthquake are described and an explanation of the effects of the earthquake is attempted. A variety of resources are used and the report is presented neatly using a range of images and with appropriate geographical vocabulary. The report makes some basic conclusions about the lessons that should be learned from the earthquake.

Level 6
The report gives a detailed and accurate description and explanation of the effects of the Kobe earthquake. The report demonstrates how the earthquake effected the rest of Japan and reaches conclusions about the lessons that should be learned from the earthquake that reflect the evidence in the report.

Level 7
A very well researched report that demonstrates independent research and reaches well argued conclusions. The report shows how earthquakes influence human activities at a variety of scales, local national and global, and lead to change in places. There is an attempt to evaluate the quality of the evidence.

Level 8
At this level students will be carefully drawing out the need for planning to reduce the effects of earthquakes and exemplifying with advanced material that they have evaluated before incorporating into their research. There is a full and coherently argued conclusion.

Exceptional Performance

In order to achieve this level the report will examine in detail the relationship between the earthquake hazard and the effect on human activities. The report will be based on a variety of carefully evaluated material and will make reference to geographical theory. The work may contain an element of self evaluation and suggestions for further enquiry.
