From the BECTa web site "The
judges liked this site because of the excellent showcase of work, range
of content and imaginative work. The pupils used ICT creatively to inspire
and stimulate learners, and were fully engaged in topics to give a learning
experience. Judges also particularly noted the impressive animations,
the teachers' commentary adding context to the work and the overall enthusiasm
conveyed by the site. Sections commended included the "Un-fairtrade" section,
where the pupils write content including debates, on-line voting, contributions,
e-mail quizzes, and the Craig David volcano, which uses multimedia to
great effect. One judge commented: "This site is both engaging and encouraging,
making the audience want to discover further."
Congratulations
to the GCSE and A level students! We had our best GCSE results in
years. Geography was the best performing Humanities subject this year!
The A level students also did well, and four students: Bowden Granville,
Irfan Al-Rashid, David Adams and Imran Iqbal are going off to do Geography
related degrees.
Our office and classrooms have been redecorated. We will have a new member
of staff and with lots of exciting projects in mind, including a field
trip to Morocco, it should be a fun year. We think that Geography is about
understanding and changing our world for the better, and so we will be
challenging and investigating with extra vigour this year ;)

We have won another award, this time from:

We were featured on the Mark
Thomas Product on the 24/1/01.
There has been a lot of very positive feedback, for example:
"Just wanted to say Hi and congratulate all the kids their on a great
performance last night. You were all a credit to your school and teacher
with the thoughtful and intelligent questions that you posed. I was impressed!
Keep up the good work and the pressure. Best wishes" R

about the Adidas
debate at school on our new site
We have won an award. How nice!
14/1/01
Our most unprecedented event yet! Mark Thomas arranged a debate between the
global affairs director of Adidas, union activists from Jakarta and Richard Howitt
MEP. The debate took place at school and 40 students took part. At the end of
the morning students were able to talk more informally with the visitors.
Last week saw the official launch of
Read all about the debate on the site soon.

We have
been visited by Mark Thomas of Channel 4 who is making a program about
conditions in clothing factories in Indonesia. Year 9 students were able
to ask questions of the senior Adidas representative in charge of global
marketing. Our new website www.unfairtrade.co.uk
is almost ready to launch. You can see the work in progress now. There's
a new addition to the quiz page; "Guess where Gemma's
shirt came from?"
15/10/00
Some changes to the home page!
Did you notice that the web ring links have been removed? We are replacing it
with a changing selection of topical web sites. This month, compare information
from the Nestle site regarding the production of coffee, with the views of the
Fair Trade organisation. Look at Rebecca Cook's persuasive writing here.
Our latest and most subversive project to date is under way. We have registered
the domain name unfair trade .co.uk. Plans will be revealed in due course!
16/9/00
Congratulations to all the students who contributed
to our excellent exam results this year!
Particular mention must be made of the twelve Year 10 students who passed
GCSE a year early, having taken the subject as an after-school activity!
Their results included 7 A grades (two of them at A*) We were delighted
with the performance of the Year 11 GCSE students, and at A level, almost
all students did as well as, or better in Geography than their other subjects.
We are especially proud of Francesca Greene who is now off to Liverpool
University to study Geography.
16/7/00
We
have a new member of department to replace Moira Young who is retiring after 26
years of Geography teaching at Hampstead School. Nicola Thomas joins us in September.
The internet links pages have been revised
and updated. This Geography Life has also been extended;
please contribute to this new idea! 20/6/00

and students. Information about the new KS3 and AS level course is now available.
There have been some additions to student's work
too. The bookshop has been extensively revised. Why
not be the first to use it!
21/5/00
We have returned from a Year 12 field trip to Mid Wales and Liverpool.
The details of the trip will be available soon!
6/5/00
It's
the start of a new term! Two
great new exercises have been added to the Lessons Page.
Try Virtual
River to learn how to measure river discharge. This is the best interactive
web site I've yet seen! There is a new Year 10 investigation into the events at
Bhopal as well.
Tom Wills has added a great article about the visit to Speedwell
Cavern
.
I am experimenting with a new feature
"Geography and Lifestyle". Have a look at the rock climbing

We
are pleased that quite a lot of money has been raised this term for charity. A
lunch time collection resulted in £152.00 being sent to the Mozambique flood
appeal. We also raised £342.00 in a collection at the end of term assembly
that has been given to Oxfam for famine
relief in the Horn of Africa. We are particularly impressed by the students from
8.1 who took part in a 24hr fast, raising nearly £200!
20/3/00
Would you like a sneak preview of the
field trip pictures?? This part of the site is unfinished. We are going to add
a teaching unit based on these pictures in due course.
We are currently working on a field trip to Kenya that will involve a live broadcast
by satellite to other schools. The students will be the presenters. It's an idea
that even beats "Rainforest in a stock cupboard". We are looking for
sponsorship so any ideas are welcome! 13/3/00
We are back from our Geography by Mountain Bike field trip. The full story will
emerge soon! 10/3/00
Our web site is becoming more widely known, and other sites are linking to
us including CAFOD, and GeoNet
who describe us as "very impressive" A number of Geography advisors
and inspectors have also written with praise for the site! New links have
been added to the Lessons page to help Year 9 with their
research homework on Nike 16/2/00

We are working on an online lesson that will teach you how to analyse population
data. The first lesson using Excel is ready. Why not
be the first to test it and find the mistakes! Did you notice the revised
home page? The Key Stage Three information for parents has been updated. |
